It doesn’t matter if you’re Tsonga or not, a woman or not – in Lucille Ball’s words, “Love yourself first and everything else will fall into place.”
In a society that pressures women [and men] to act and be a certain way, the Brutal Fruit #bravetoloveme campaign is about breaking stereotypes and stripping normative labels that marginalise those who don’t “fit into society’s beauty mould”. It motivates women from all walks of life to be brave and unapologetic about who and what they are, and also challenges young women to ask themselves: what does it mean to be brave enough to love yourself?
Leanne Martin, Director: Category Brutal Fruit said “Social norms have prescribed to women how to behave and have limited their expression for far too long. If women don’t conform to stereotypes, they are marked they are othered, violated or discriminated against in efforts to get them to correct and fit into a box. The #bravetoloveme campaign encourages women all over the world to stop seeking validation and brutally love who they are and bravely own their identity and own version of what is beautiful and what is self-love.”
The campaign officially launched in February 2018 and features six women who are the epitome of self-love. The women include Danine Naidoo, Genna-wae Webster, Yoliswa Mqoco, Glow Makatsi, Refilwe Modiselle and Delta The Leo; who will all be leading the collaboration on this campaign.
